Top Chef Seattle: The Fried Chicken Challenge

Stefan's Quickfire Dish

We have reached the point in the season where there is no longer immunity, which means we are almost to the end!  By now we should only be seeing top rate dishes, but tonight that may not be the case.

Quickfire Challenge:

The challenge is to create their own sushi dish and one of L.A.’s four Master Sushi Chefs, Katsuya Uechi, was on hand to judge.  This challenge stumped Josh, who put bacon pieces in his sushi. However, Stefan impresses the guest judge with his Yellowtail with Grilled Shiitake and Raw Lobster with Seaweed and Unagi and wins the challenge, and $5,000! Stefan is very proud of this moment because this is his first win in his two seasons of being on Top Chef.

Elimination Challenge:

The elimination challenge is to make fried chicken per Tom’s request. Josh, of course, is thrilled with this challenge because his style is southern cooking. However, some of the other contestants aren’t so sure about this challenge, especially Brooke.

The chefs each presented their dishes to all of the judges for the evening which included: Padma, Tom, Wolfgang Puck, Emeril Lagasse, David Chang, Michelle Bernstein, Jon Shook, and Vinny Dotolo.

The night does not go so well and Tom had this to say about the episode, “We asked the chefs to do one of the simplest things imaginable: make fried chicken. What did we get? Everything except fried chicken. We couldn’t believe it. We were so disappointed…”

Josh's Elimination Challenge Dish

Alas, there were some positive parts of the evening. The judges loved Lizzie’s side dish, Sheldon’s chicken, and every part of Josh’s dish! Josh is ultimately the winner of the challenge.

The bottom three included Stefan, Josie, and Brooke.

Brooke is criticized for taking her chicken breast off of the bone, Josie is scolded for her chicken being too greasy, and Stefan is told his dish belonged at a bad banquet dinner.

Ultimately, the judges send Josie home!

While I will never claim to be an expert at  making anything in the kitchen, I especially do know how to make fried chicken! Here are some Deep Frying in Coconut Oil: Helpful Tips and if you’re looking for a way to eat healthier, try our Frying Made Healthy.

What did you think of last night’s episode?
