Top 10 Household Uses for Coconut Oil

I don’t know about you, but I just spent way too much money on Christmas presents.  So January is all about saving money.  Instead of buying a bunch of different household products, pull out your jar of coconut oil.  Here are our top 10 ways to use coconut oil around the house (not including cooking and baking):

  1. Moisturizing and cleaning leather products – Rub a small amount of coconut oil on a cloth and polish your favorite leather shoes.  Surprise your dad or husband!
  2. Clean rusty scissors or knives – Put a small amount of coconut oil on scissors or knife and let it sit on there for about 1 hour.  Then rinse with warm water for rust-free scissors.
  3. Furniture Polish – Add a small amount of lemon juice to your coconut oil and use on wood furniture.  Test on a small area first.
  4. Remove scuffs from your hard wood floor – Rub a small amount of coconut oil directly on the scuff mark and rub until gone.  Make sure to clean up the oil afterwards, you don’t want to slip.
  5. Remove stickers from new products – With all of those brand new presents sitting around the house you are bound to have a few where the price tag just won’t come off.  Remove the stickiness with a little bit of coconut oil.
  6. Remove gum from hair – Apply coconut oil directly on to the gum.  Let sit for half an hour then slowly pull the gum out.  Added bonus: It will leave your hair feeling silky smooth, it is a great pre-shampoo conditioner.
  7. Season your brand new cast-iron skillet – Coat your pan with coconut oil and season as you normally would.
  8. Itchy bug bites – Rub coconut oil on bug bites to stop the itch and aid in the healing process.

Old Wives Tales around the office:

      9.   Apply before cutting an onion – If you don’t want you hands to smell like onion all night, apply coconut oil to your fingers before touching the onion.

     10.  No more creaky doors – Apply coconut oil to any creaky door hinges. Voila!  No more creaks!
