Make Your Own Dog Food

My dog Graham patiently awaiting his meal.

Today is National Dog Appreciation Day, so in honor of that we wanted to give you the chance to give your dogs a tasty treat. Any time you change your dog’s diet it is important to contact your veterinarian first to avoid any unwanted health risks. When cooking for your dog, be sure to maintain the proper percentages of protein, carbohydrates, fiber, and fat our four-legged friends require for a balanced meal. The Founder’s Veterinary Clinic of Brea, California, offers a sample recipe for 20-pound dogs that you can half for 10-pounders or doubled for 40-pound canines.

Ingredients:
1/4 pound of cooked, skinless chicken
1 cup of cooked brown rice
1 cup of peas and carrots
1 tablespoon of vegetable oil (like Kelapo Coconut Oil)
1/4 teaspoon of a salt substitute.

Just mix together and let Fido enjoy this special treat!

So why make the 1:1 ratio substitution of Kelapo Coconut Oil in place of the vegetable oil? Vegetable oil is packed with polyunsaturated fats and some transfats which are not the least bit good for your four-legged friend; substituting coconut oil can offer your furry companion the same health benefits it offers you like digestion and metabolism, along with giving them a soft and shiny coat. Be sure to show your dog you appreciate him with our Frozen Dog Treats, as well! So in honor of National Dog Appreciation Day be sure to pay a little extra attention to your one friend (or friends) that has always been there for you with a smiling face and a wet nose.
