Fat Isn’t as Bad as You Think

Have you ever thought about the importance of incorporating healthy fats into your diet? One misconception many people have is eating any kind of fat will make you gain weight. “It’s a myth that if you eat fat, you’ll be fat,” says Dr. Felicia D. Stoler, a registered dietitian and author of “Living Skinny in Fat Genes.” According to Dr. Stoler, fat is an essential nutrient and is necessary to transport fat-soluble vitamins into our bodies.

Eating fat helps us feel full. When fat is processed out of foods, often times it is replaced with sugar, salt or refined carbohydrates to help with the flavor.

Coconut oil is a great example of a healthy fat. Dr. Stoler says research suggests fats, even saturated fats, that are plant based, like coconut oil, aren’t damaging to our health as we once thought. Simply replace any recipe that calls for butter or other oils for coconut oil in a 1:1 ratio; it’s that simple!

The saturated fats in coconut oil are made up of medium chain triglycerides (MCTs), which give the oil its anti-microbial properties. Some studies have shown MCTs can help in the process of excess calorie burning and assist with weight loss. This fatty acid may help you drop a few pounds by promoting fat oxidation which helps to curb appetite and reduce food intake.

I personally incorporate coconut oil into my diet, while keeping sweets and unhealthy foods at a minimum. Exercise is extremely important to add into your routine if aiming towards trimming your waistline. Celebrity trainer, Bob Harper, even says exercise trumps diet. “It is all about your diet. I used to think that you can beat everything you eat out of you and it’s just absolutely not the case.”

I make sure to weight train 5 days a week and add in cardio around 3 to 5 times per week. Some of my favorite ways to use coconut oil are by adding it into protein shakes, oatmeal, and healthy stir-fry. I’ve actually experienced my sugar cravings diminishing for the most part and I love the feeling of being full and energized.

Have you tried incorporating coconut oil into your daily routine?
