DIY Coconut Oil Deodorant Stick That Won’t Melt

Super easy, Homemade Deodorant that won't melt!

I have been trying to stay away from deodorants that contain aluminum for a while now, especially since it is been linked to both breast cancer and Alzheimer’s Disease. So I have been testing out different brands of aluminum-free deodorants and I have had problems with almost every one of them. A couple had me constantly reapplying throughout the day, which means you always have to carry the deodorant with you… huge inconvenience! A couple others actually made my armpits peel… not attractive! I googled this and found that it was actually a common problem with one brand in particular (which shall remain unnamed). After doing a little research online, I learned the main ingredient that causes the peeling armpits is propylene glycol, so you should probably stay away from that as well as aluminum in your deodorants. Something that makes the top layer of your skin peel off just can’t be good for you. So after all of these fails, I decided to start experimenting with homemade deodorants. I finally found a recipe that not only moisturizes, but it also lasts all day long and I am yet to find a complaint. It is super easy to make with only a few ingredients.

The secret ingredient here (in addition to the coconut oil) is the tea tree oil. Don’t skip this ingredient or you might wind up with some stinky pits. Tea tree oil is antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal. This will help keep the odor away all day!

Remember this is a deodorant, not an antiperspirant. It will not keep you from sweating, but that’s ok! You want your body to sweat to get rid of all of the toxins. You don’t want to clog up your pores with aluminum. Your body will adjust after a short period of time and you will be back to normal again.

In addition to all of those great benefits, this deodorant recipe is great for the summer! With the addition of beeswax it keeps its form and you are able to keep it in a deodorant stick container so that you don’t have to apply it with your fingers. That is perfect for our hot summers in Florida! You can also make this recipe without beeswax. However, it won’t hold its shape in a stick form. You will have to put this mixture in a small mason jar or shallow container and apply it with your fingers everyday. You can also add more beeswax if you know that the deodorant will be stored in a hot place.

After making this myself I have some tips for you to follow while you make it:

*If you have sensitive skin cut down or completely eliminate the baking soda.

*I don’t have a double boiler at home, so I used two non-stick pans instead and washed them immediately afterwards with no problems of waxy film forming on the bottom of my pots.

*Make sure to work quickly after adding the baking soda and corn starch, so it doesn’t thicken up before you are able to transfer it to the deodorant stick.

*I had a little bit leftover, so I just poured the rest in a small mason jar to use once I run out of the stick.

*I made mine with just tea tree oil with no other essential oils added. I love the smell, but if you don’t love the smell of tea tree oil make sure to add in another essential oil such as lavender.

DIY Coconut Oil Deodorant StickĀ

  • 1/4 cup corn starch
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 3 Tbsp Kelapo coconut oil
  • 1 Tbsp grated beeswax
  • 5-10 drops tea tree oil
  • 5-10 drops of your favorite essential oil – optional
  • 1 old deodorant stick container

Melt coconut oil and beeswax with a double boiler until melted, stirring constantly. Add in tea tree oil and essential oils, if using. Remove from heat and add in the baking soda and corn starch, stirring quickly so mixture stays liquid. Quickly poor mixture into deodorant container before it thickens. Let deodorant cool and harden for a few hours before using.
