DIY: Candle Making with Coconut Oil

Finished Candle!!

Everyone loves burning candles in their home, it makes for a relaxing setting and leaves your house smelling nice. Candles are the perfect homemade gift for the holidays. You’re probably thinking making candles that seems so difficult, but that’s where you are mistaken. It was so simple to make candles and the process doesn’t require a lot of supplies.

Supplies:

6 oz soy wax beads (I chose vanilla scented beads)

2 teaspoons coconut oil

Candles after the liquid wax was poured in.

1 pack of 6 tealights with wicks

1 cup of water

1 medium saucepan

Directions:

  •  Place wicks into the tealight cups so they are stnding straight up
  •  Heat water in a medium saucepan until boiling
  •  Pour wax beads into an aluminum can and place into boiling water
  •  Gently stir the beads until they melt into liquid wax and turn off your heat
  •  Pickup can using a oven mitt, it will be very hot, and gently pour wax into tealight cups

Candles hardening

This is a very simple process that does not take long at all! The whole process took me about 10 minutes. Once you pour the liquid wax into your tealight cups you will need to wait about 15 to 20 minutes for the wax to harden.

Tips:

You may use a double-boiler, but I chose to use an empty soup can and it worked just as well.

I had extra wax left over so you may need to buy more tealight cups or larger candle holders.

Pour a thin layer of wax into each tealight cup and wait about 10 minutes for the wax to harden, then pour the rest of the wax in. This will help to keep the wick standing up straight.

The more coconut oil you use the stronger the scent of coconut, so if you love the smell add more oil!

I had no idea that candle making was such a simple process! I bought all of the supplies at my local craft store and they had SO much to choose from. If you wanted to get really creative you can dye your own wax and add many different scents to your wax. If you were making larger candles you could even decorate the jar for a nice holiday gift. Have you ever tried to make your own candles?
