It’s that time of year! Time for bikinis, boats, beaches, and LOTS of sun exposure. Being a mostly Irish, fair-skinned girl, I have to be super careful about my skin.
Every time I go to a tradeshow or talk to a large group of people about Kelapo coconut oil, someone inevitably points out that coconut oil is a natural sunblock, and that people in the South Pacific have been using it that way for hundreds of years. When I was in Hawaii last year, I even spotted this on a bottle of virgin coconut oil:
“Promotes deep and dark natural tan while moisturizing and maintaining a healthy skin appearance.”
While I’m not suggesting that you toss your SPF 30 in favor of oiling up (though if you do, let me know how it went!) I can attest that coconut oil is the BEST thing for skin AFTER sun exposure. Try using it next time you come in from the pool to deeply moisturize parched skin, or to quickly heal that awful sunburn you got while golfing.
Bonus: Use coconut oil on chlorine-damaged hair, too!

I keep coconut oil in my bathroom for removing eye make-up, moisturizing before bed and the occasional hair help. The other day I volunteered at my daughter’s school for Field Day and ended up with a little too much sun. I thought “coconut oil is good for everything else, bet it’s good for a sunburn, too!” Great to see that my instincts were right!
You were definitely right Megan. I use it every time I get a little too much sun and it works great!
I havent yet used it for sun exposure but it does help with itch from bug bites. It does help for a burn so sunburn would be the same. Surely cant hurt is my motto.
What a novel use for such a multi-purpose oil! Healthy for your skin and plus, I bet it smells delicious too!
Thanks Genevieve! You definitely smell amazing after using it!
As far as after sun use, does it hold the heat from the sunburn in like say, butter would if you got a burn? My family is always getting too much sun and suffering after with really bad burns, I have usually used iced tea compresses or iced milk compresses..would I use the coconut oil instead of all this and should it be organic extra virgin? Thanks!!!
For me it definitely soothes the burning sensation you feel when you have a bad sunburn. I would definitely give it a try. It acts as a moisturizer as well, so I’m sure you could use it by itself or in addition to your compresses. Let us know how it goes!
