Coconut Oil and Oral Health

For pearly whites, reach for the coconut oil!

If there’s ever a day to make your dentist proud, it’s today. It’s National Dentist Day! And in honor of this day we are here to help with some at-home ways to make your smile some to, well, smile about!

Coconut oil has been used for centuries to help with oral health. Most popularly in oil pulling – where you literally swish about a tablespoon of oil in your mouth for up to 20 minutes. Food Matters TV recently posted an article about this ancient homeopathic use. I really liked the way they explained WHY this practice works:

“As the oil is swished around the mouth, teeth, gums and tongue, the oil continues to absorb toxins, and usually ends up turning thick and viscous and white. Once the oil has reached this consistency, it is spit out before the toxins are reabsorbed.” – Food Matters TV

Other benefits can include whitening teeth and better breath. I also noticed my teeth weren’t as sensitive as they normally are. It’s recommended to do this either first thing in the morning or the last thing at night, before brushing your teeth.

Oil pulling shouldn’t replace brushing or flossing. However, you can make your own toothpaste. With just a few ingredients, you can whip up a natural way to clean your teeth.
